Through the Racial Equity investment area, NewSchools is investing $1.5 million in innovators with bold ideas to alleviate racial inequities in education. Instead of a traditional grantmaking approach, this is the council, comprised of parents, students, and education innovators, making the decisions.

Parent Leader

Tramena is the mother of five children. Her youngest child is a student in the Detroit Public Schools Community District. Tramena has been a leader in her community since 2013. She volunteers to help run a parent resource center at her son’s school that connects families to critical resources and services. She is also active in the school’s Parent Teacher Student Association, where she has been an officer. 

“This will be my first time ever being part of a grantmaking committee. I have applied for grants and received two in the past three years. It was challenging, but I figured, if you speak from the heart and you are real about your purpose, there may be a chance to receive a grant.”
