Shelley Hughes leads the finance team at NewSchools, overseeing financial operations to ensure the organization’s financial health and stability. Her responsibilities include budgeting, cash flow oversight, asset management, maintaining fiscal policies, and financial reporting.
Before joining NewSchools, Shelley was President of the National Finance Team at EdOps, where she led the delivery of finance and accounting services to charter schools across the country. She began her career as an investment banker and private equity associate before pivoting into the nonprofit sector, starting in charter school operations. She holds an MBA and a master’s in education from Stanford University, and a bachelor’s in finance from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.
Shelley lives in Washington, D.C., with her husband and three children. She enjoys spending time outdoors with her family and is passionate about public education, having attended Pennsylvania public schools herself. Her two older children attend D.C. public schools, and she serves on the boards of the DC Special Education Cooperative and the Appletree Institute.
