Racial Equity Council

Through the Racial Equity investment area, NewSchools is investing $1.5 million in innovators with bold ideas to alleviate racial inequities in education. Instead of a traditional grantmaking approach, this is the council, comprised of parents, students, and education innovators, making the decisions.

Science Teacher

Michelle is a fifth year high school science teacher for the Aldine Independent School District. Through her experience in education she has come to find out the strange rules and regulations that both help and limit student’s overall success and it has fueled her to find ways of helping the institution she has grown to love.

Before I knew the words ‘racial equity,’ I knew, ‘not right.’ That is what I… would later learn to be racial inequity within the school system. That experience inspired me to sign up for the council, and I hope that I can help make right in education what we have allowed to remain wrong for far too long.”
