Through the Racial Equity investment area, NewSchools is investing $1.5 million in innovators with bold ideas to alleviate racial inequities in education. Instead of a traditional grantmaking approach, this is the council, comprised of parents, students, and education innovators, making the decisions.

Jenny Song

Jenny Song

Education Researcher

Jenny is a researcher at Breakthrough Collaborative, a nonprofit that creates supportive learning communities to improve equity among college graduates and the next generation of educational leaders. She developed a passion for education through her experiences as a Teaching Fellow at Breakthrough New York, and then joined Teach For America to expand her equity lens. Jenny taught at two Title I schools in San Jose, California where she impacted student growth through data-driven and culturally relevant practices. She also has a range of research experiences in higher education, notably specializing in race, religion, and child-discipline. 

“I want to see what the decision-making process will look like with a diverse group of people who all come with a unique set of experiences in education… and to bring structures back to my organization as we have been grappling with ways to share power with our stakeholders.”
