Live From Summit 2016: Newark Beyond the Headlines

May 11, 2016

Jen Holleran of Startup: Education, moderated a thought-provoking session exploring some of the inherent conflicts – fiscal, facilities and enrollment policies – that result from creating a system of diverse school options.  The panelists that joined her were:

  • Christopher Cerf, Newark Public Schools Superintendent
  • Mashea Ashton, Newark Charter School Fund’s CEO.

In addition, the speakers discussed the roles and responsibilities of both the traditional school district and the charter school community in achieving increased choice, equity and access.

“There’s a lesson here for philanthropists that comes from really listening to the community,” Holleran said. “It’s a combination of the big strategic stuff and the little things that matter to teachers and community members.”
