SUMMARY:Academic Systems Initiative – Virtual Community of Practice Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:In 2007\, NewSchools Venture Fund launched the Academic Systems Initiative (ASI) as part of our third fund. The ASI was a partnership with our practitioners in our portfolio\, and engaged the community in guiding investments in innovative solutions to improve data-driven instruction. The infrastructure\, hardware\, software\, and platforms are either available or being developed that will change the nature of how we teach our children in profound and far reaching ways. This high-tech wave will sweep through the educational world\, but its speed and impact depend on the quality of ideas and entrepreneurs and their ability to execute. This is where we intend to act.Imagine K12 is looking to invest time\, experience\, energy and resources in entrepreneurs who have a passion for education and the technical know-how to create their vision. Over a three month period\, we will draw on our extensive entrepreneurial experience\, understanding of the Silicon Valley ecosystem\, and knowledge of the education industry to give your idea and energy a far greater shot at success. www.imaginek12.comAbout Kauffman Education Ventures Program\, Kauffman Labs for Enterprise CreationPart school and part business accelerator\, Kauffman Labs for Enterprise Creation is a new approach to developing the next generation of high-growth firms. Tapping the Kauffman Foundation’s vast entrepreneurship knowledge and networks\, the program seeks to accelerate the number and success of new firms by offering a new method for teaching and training entrepreneurs of dynamic\, fast-growth\, scalable businesses in a lab setting\, while studying the "science of startups" in the process. For more information\, visit www.kauffmanlabs.org.About StartlOur mission is to make learning as engaging and effective as possible through the strategic use of digital media – from kindergarten to college\, in and outside the classroom. We do this by recruiting promising young innovators and turning their powerful ideas for learning into successful products for market.Everyone agrees – from policymakers and businesspeople to teachers and kids – that we have yet to realize the potential of new media and technologies to transform learning. The established structures in education and business make it hard for exciting innovations cropping up outside the system to get the support they need to rise up in the market.By bringing together the philanthropic sector with the private sector\, we at Startl are creating a critical missing link between innovation and capital. We’re also making sure these emerging technologies reflect what we know makes for the best learning\, versus just what will sell. In this way\, we’re accelerating the process of innovation and changing the future of learning in both a socially responsible and economically sound way.www.startl.orgHost Organizations:About NewSchools Venture FundNewSchools Venture Fund seeks to transform public education through powerful ideas and passionate entrepreneurs so that all children – especially those in underserved communities – have the opportunity to succeed. As a national nonprofit venture philanthropy firm\, NewSchools supports education entrepreneurs\, a special breed of innovators who create new nonprofit and for-profit organizations that redefine our sense of what is possible in public education. Founded in 1998\, NewSchools has invested in more than 35 nonprofit and for-profit organizations and raised nearly $150 million. NewSchools takes an active role with each venture in our portfolio to help them create sustainable organizations that generate breakthrough results at scale for the students they serve. In addition to this direct support to entrepreneurs\, NewSchools also connects their work to the broader public education reform movement to catalyze systems change. For more information\, visit www.newschools.org.About Teach For AmericaTeach For America is the national corps of outstanding recent college graduates who commit to teach for two years in urban and rural public schools and become lifelong leaders in expanding educational opportunity. Today\, more than 8\,200 corps members are teaching in 39 regions across the country while 20\,000 Teach For America alumni continue working from inside and outside the field of education for the fundamental changes necessary to ensure educational excellence and equity. For more information\, visit www.teachforamerica.orgAbout the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at StanfordFive years ago\, those at the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design started with a dream about building a place for design at Stanford. They wanted to build a place where design thinking is the glue that binds people together\, a place they called the d.school. The d.school has become a hub for Stanford students and faculty in engineering\, medicine\, business\, the humanities\, and education to learn design thinking and work together to solve big problems in a human centered way. These students have taken the design thinking methodology and applied it in new places to new problems. Along the way\, they have developed their own process for reliably producing innovative solutions to nearly any challenge. In a time when there is hunger for innovation everywhere\, they believe our first responsibility is to help prepare a generation of students to rise with the challenges of our times. These “students” will increasingly range from kindergarteners to senior executives at Fortune 500 companies. For more information\, visit http://dschool.stanford.edu/.
