SUMMARY:Learning to Teach Community of Practice

DESCRIPTION:The Community of Practice event is an invitation-only event for NewSchools portfolio members and funders. The 2011 Community of Practice event allowed for more informal networking and learning opportunities. NewSchools designed a range of Meetups which allowed Community participants to network in more intimate settings. We will post resources from the sessions as they become available. Please follow the links in the resource section to the right or click on the icons next to session titles to download resources.Agenda Tuesday\, May 17\, 2011 1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. The following sessions took place off-site. Social Networking @ Facebook Alex Grodd\, CEO of BetterLesson will talk turkey on Social Networking on the way to and from Facebook. At Facebook you can check out the company’s cool digs in Palo Alto and learn more about the company\, its culture and people. Learning Through Games at Electronic Arts Take a tour of Gaming Powerhouse Electronic Arts\, maker of Tiger Woods PGA Tour\, Coconut Dodge for Iphone\, and Madden Football with Beth Purvis\, CEO of CICS and one of the forces behind ChicagoQuest\, an organization ‘remixing’ New York city’s Quest to Learn school and Richard Hilleman\, EA’s Chief Creative Officer. Steering Innovation Join a trip led by Bill Kurtz of DSST Public Schools to BMW's Silicon Valley Technology Center to learn how the engineering team at BMW thinks about improvement and innovation. Applying Design Thinking to Close the Achievement Gap @ IDEO Join Ellen Moir of the New Teacher Center and Sandy Speicher of IDEO for a tour of IDEO’s Palo Alto office. Learn how the principles of Smart Design drive some of the most innovative organizations in education and other sectors. Blended Learning Join Anthony Kim\, CEO of Education Elements for a facilitated discussion and trip to Google focused on Blended Learning Environments and how they are changing the education landscape. The following sessions take place at the Hyatt: 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Looking Back to Look Forward: Examining CMO Challenges  Using data collected over the years\, examine the greatest challenges in building CMOs–we’ll look at uneven performance\, growth\, and sustainability. We’ll also brainstorm some possible solutions. 3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. 10 things I wish my mother told me about selling an education brand Join Mark Williams\, Principal and Director of Brand Strategy at San Francisco’s Mortar Agency for an engaging workshop and discussion about developing actionable strategies that reach audiences and buyers of all types. 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Keynote Discussion   Bing Gordon may know more about video games than anyone else on earth. Gordon\, a Partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers\, took that post after a legendary decade as Chief Creative Officer at video game giant Electronic Arts. An unapologetic evangelist for the “videogamification of everything\,” he has provocatively titled his talk\, “Videogame Design Thinking: New Manipulatives For Education… Or\, How Playing Videogames will Change a Generation’s Preferences and Expectations.” In the talk\, Gordon will take on the controversial topic of how video games will affect learning—and vice versa. He’ll also take questions from the audience. 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Annual Reception\, Dinner and Awards Ceremony The evening will culminate with the Annual NewSchools Community of Practice Dinner where we will take time to celebrate successes of individuals and the collective group. The restaurant\, Max’s Opera Café is adjacent to the Hyatt. 8:30 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. Summit Reception After the Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony\, you are welcome for a Reception welcoming Summit attendees back at the Hyatt. Joining the Meetup Group The easiest way to register for COP sessions is to join Meetup. Getting on Meetup will take about a minute\, and will allow you to see who else is coming\, to connect with those people in advance if you wish\, and to lock in your space in the activities you want to join. To become a member of our Meetup group please follow these instructions:  Go to http://www.meetup.com/nsvfcop2011/ and click “Join Us.” Register for the site by creating a Meetup account\, or by using your Facebook account. When you register\, NewSchools will receive a notification of your request\, and will approve you as a member of our group. Log back in to your account and sign up for the Meetups you would like to attend.   Please register for the two general sessions—the keynote with Bing Gordon and the Annual Dinner so that we can plan for your attendance. Take a look at the planned Meetups and RSVP to the one that interests you the most. If you’re not interested in any of the planned Meetups\, you can create your own Meetup on a topic of interest to you!  Just click Schedule a Meetup on the group tools menu. Register early to reserve a spot in your preferred sessions\, as space is limited!
