Kim is a longtime educator and administrator who is committed to building the systems and programs necessary to improve education for children in underserved communities. Prior to joining NewSchools, Kim served as the Deputy State Superintendent of Education in the DC Office of the State Superintendent, where she led elementary and secondary education programs, including innovative new teacher and administrator certification programs. Before that, Kim was appointed State Administrator of the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), a large urban public school system in California, where she had been serving as Chief Academic Officer. As Administrator, she was responsible for both the academic and fiscal recovery of the district, and also led Expect Success, a district redesign initiative that attracted unprecedented private and charitable investments in Oakland schools.

Prior to working in Oakland, Kim served as Regional Vice President and General Manager for Edison Schools, where she oversaw Edison’s charter schools in Washington, DC, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Miami, and as Deputy Superintendent and Chief Academic Officer in Howard County, Maryland. Kim began her career in education as a teacher, principal, director and ultimately community superintendent in Maryland’s Montgomery County Public School System, where she created and led successful programs including a reform effort for failing schools, a strong district accountability system and a significant revision of the teacher evaluation system – all of which continue to be implemented and replicated due to their impressive results.

Kim earned her bachelor of arts degree from the University of Maryland and received her MA in teaching and Ph.D. in educational psychology from Howard University in Washington, D.C. She lives in North Bethesda, Maryland, and has two children, Ariana and Michael, Jr.
